Equity Committee
What is EQUITY? Equity means fairness. It means that management and the union treat workers fairly and equally regardless of their race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, handicap, or veteran status.
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1032 Committee on Equity was established in 1986, its primary mission is to act as a resource for the union local and membership on fairness and discrimination issues. One of the cornerstones of unionism has been the struggle for fair and equal treatment on the job and in society. Because of "socialized programming" it is necessary for unions to establish practices and procedures that will provide safeguards from prejudicial and discriminatory actions.
The Committee on Equity can offer the checks and balances needed to provide fair and equitable representation for all members. This is accomplished by the following:
By working to build an effective and cooperative committee that provides a valuable service to the Union and the membership;
To educate and inform the membership of equity issues, laws and protections. As well as, increase minority participation in the union local activities;
They assist in the representation of workers in situations where workers are discriminated against and act as impartial investigators when the alleged discrimination is charged against a union official.
